When you stand up, you notice the difference between a set of knee braces and knee guards. Knee guards offer good impact protection, but braces help prevent hyper-extension (over-straightening of the knee joint) as well as preventing twisting of the knee. Braces do take a little getting used too and they feel a bit bulkier when you first jump onto your bike.
